There are 195 925 people with disabilities living in the Republic of Armenia (RA), 93 134 of which are women. In all over the world women and girls with disabilities face different types of discrimination. In contrast to men, who have the same problems, women are twice more vulnerable first because of their sex and then because of their disability.
RA Constitutions states that one of the basic tasks of the state is to implement health care programs for the population and contribute to effective and affordable medical service for the population (RA Constitution, Article 48, point 4).
Republic of Armenia ratified UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2010 (hereafter Convention), which in a separate article refers to the rights of women and girls with disabilities obliging States Partis to take all appropriate measures to ensure the full development, advancement and empowerment of women, for the purpose of guaranteeing them the exercise and enjoyment of the human rights and fundamental freedoms set out in the present Convention (UN Convention, Article 6).

Sex Selective Abortions as Part of Gender Discrimination in Armenian Family (English)

Sex-selective abortions’ (SSAs) cases are not new in Armenian society and even this problem
was investigated in lots of researches there are still some aspects which need to be studied more. In
nowadays Armenia there are lots of talks about demographic consequences of SSA, its reasons are
actively discussed, but still there is no awareness of how it affects the social-psychological climate
and environment of the family.
This project tries to refer to these questions, and particularly, understand whether the SSA is
the result of woman’s decision or it is implemented in other conditions (this hypothesis appeared in
the researcher’s mind a result of her professional observations and case studies with families and
children). Namely, in the context of this project SSA has been observed as a complex phenomenon
and as typical expression of the gender-based discrimination in family.

Gender Attitudes of Yerevan State University Students - Survey Results

Introduction

Gender equality has been a topic of discussion in Armenian society ever since Armenia
gained independence. Just as many other post-soviet countries, Armenia ratified various
international conventions and developed national polices to protect women’s rights and ensure
equality between men and women. However, the perceptions and attitudes of people in regards
to gender equality are not always positive. This is due to a widespread opinion, that gender
equality is something imposed by the European countries, and the US, and might destroy
Armenian families, giving women more power, and empowering them to raise their voices. Now,
apart from the misinterpretation of gender equality, there are also various factors specific to any
patriarchal society that contribute to the poor participation of women in politics, preventing the
full and effective involvement of women in the labor market. Among the main obstacles
influencing this situation, the following may be identified: lack of economic and social capital
among women; too much family responsibilities for women; certain expectations that women
(finding their origin in Armenian cultural values) should be humble, play a secondary and
supportive role, and not pursue career ambitions with passion; the well-known phenomena of
the glass ceiling; and the defamation of an organization and individuals who work for gender
equality.

Call for Papers for Conference - “Women, Leadership, and Society”

Yerevan State University Center for Gender and Leadership Studies is pleased to announce a call for paper for its second annual Conference “Women, Leadership, and Society”. The conference will take place on June 10th, 2014 at Yerevan State University (A. Manoogian str.1, Balian conference hall).
Recent decades have seen considerable progress in women’s participation in political, economic, and sociocultural life across the globe. The share of women in legislative bodies has grown and so has their presence in top echelons of economic management. Women are increasingly found among leaders of civic and non-governmental organizations. Women’s contributions to culture and art are increasingly acknowledged. Despite this progress, women continue to be underrepresented in political, economic, civic, and cultural leadership. The CGLS Conference will critically examine both the progress in women’s advancement to leadership roles in different spheres of society and the legal, economic, and sociocultural obstacles to this advancement. It will seek effective policy solutions to problems and challenges that hinder women’s leadership in Armenia and globally.
The Conference will address a wide range of topics, including:
  • Women, men, and leadership in the context of rapid social change.
  • Global and local theory and practice of women’s leadership
  • Women’s leadership in politics
  • Women’s leadership in economic and business life
  • Women’s leadership in the cultural, educational, and scientific spheres
  • Women leadership of social and civic movements and organizations
  • Women’s leadership in national, regional and global peace and security
  • Political, legal, cultural, and socio-psychological barriers to women’s leadership
  • The role of women’s and gender studies in advancing women’s leadership in society
  • Communicating research on women’s leadership to non-academic audiences
  • From research to policy: translating research findings into practice.
We welcome submissions from scholars and researchers, as well as representatives of non-governmental organizations and social activists. Limited funds are available to support travel and accommodation of participants from outside Yerevan.
Submission of abstracts: Please send an abstract of up to 500 words describing the theoretical background, methodology, main results, and policy implications of your paper in Armenian or English and a one-page bio or CV of the main author by March 31, 2014 to the following e-mail addresses: cgls@ysu.am, genderlead@yahoo.com. Please write “CLGS 2014 Conference Submission” in the subject of your e-mail. If the presenting author is based outside Yerevan, please indicate if they will need financial support toward their travel to the Conference and the approximate amount of the funds needed. Financial support will be allocated based on availability.
Authors will be notified if their papers have been accepted for presentation by April 15, 2014. CGLS plans to publish the full texts of papers presented at the Conference.
For additional information, please contact the YSU Center for Gender and Leadership Studies office: A. Manoogian str.1, room #436, Yerevan, Armenia, e-mail: cgls@ysu.am,  genderlead@yahoo.com, phone: +37460710390.
